Learn how to make pudding at home with this top-rated recipe.
You'll find a detailed ingredient list and step-by-step instructions in the recipe below, but let's go over the basics:
These are the six simple ingredients you’ll need to make this homemade vanilla pudding recipe:
Sugar: Sweeten the pudding with 1⁄3 cup of white sugar.
Cornstarch: Three tablespoons of cornstarch thickens the vanilla pudding.
Salt: ½ teaspoon of salt enhances the flavor, but it won’t make the pudding taste salty.
Milk: This recipe uses two cups of whole milk for creamy results.
Vanilla: Of course, you’ll need vanilla extract!
Butter: A tablespoon of butter takes the rich vanilla pudding up a notch.
Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect when you make vanilla pudding at home:
1. Whisk the sugar, cornstarch, and salt together in a medium saucepan.
2. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth and bring to the boil.
3. Remove the pudding from the heat, then stir in the butter and vanilla.
4. Serve or chill pudding before serving.

Store the vanilla pudding in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Yes! You can freeze homemade vanilla pudding, but the texture could change and become grainy when frozen and thawed, even thought the flavor will be fine. For best results, enjoy it fresh within a few days or use thawed pudding as an ingredient in cooked desserts like bread pudding or a cake filling.
1/3 cup white sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups whole milk
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Step 1
Mix sugar, cornstarch, and salt together in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan.
Step 2
Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat, whisking often, about 8 minutes. Once mixture comes to a boil, cook, whisking constantly, for 1 minute.
Step 3
Remove saucepan from heat, and stir in butter and vanilla.
Step 4
Spoon pudding evenly into 5 serving dishes. Let stand until slightly cooled, about 10 minutes. For best results, cover with plastic wrap pressed directly on pudding to prevent a skin forming and refrigerate until chilled and set, about 2 hours.
a extremely good taste food
I can't imagine why anyone would speak negatively about this recipe, except that they are so used to commercial pudding and the lengthy list of ingredients and chemicals. So, this wholesome recipe would not appeal to them. But this is how pudding is supposed to taste! And it's great! Followed the recipe as written, but since I like my pudding a bit thicker, I continued to cook it on low heat for another 3-4 minutes after adding the butter and vanilla, and it was perfect! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!
I made this with stevia brown sugar, then added like 1tbsp coco powder to and it was delicious!
It's a decent pudding. I'd recommend cutting the amount of sugar (at least) in half.
I’ve made this twice! It’s so delicious! I added a little extra cornstarch to make it thicker. This is a keeper for me 😊
